ADDICTED TO JUICE?

Isaac & Evan drink more juice than I had ever planned on allowing. I always thought they would be the type that would have water to drink during the day, with a cup of juice @ meal times. This is not the case. These kids are BEGGING for juice all day long. Granted I actually fill their cup more than half full with water first, then add a little juice for flavor, but still....I am starting to wonder if my kids could possibly be addicted to apple juice! Can anyone tell me if their kids drink as much as mine!? They are not great eaters either. Isaac is horrible. He will hardly eat a bowl of cereal for breakfast, have about 5 bottles of "juice" then he is ready for a snack- pretzels maybe and sometimes eat a lunch, guzzle another 5 bottles and so on. I have even tried NOT buying juice to see if they would drink water, but that did not work. They want milk ALL DAY LONG.

ANY SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOME!

I can totally relate. We didn't buy juice when they were little because I had nephews addicted and I hated it. So...mine asked for MILK ALL DAY! Which I am sure is no better. So I started buying V8 fusion which has a full serving of fruits AND vegetable per glass. In fact, the first few ingrediants are veggies. Now they are addicted to juice, they love the stuff, it makes me feel better that it has veggies in it. It is spendy, but worth it, I think.

We also started saying that the doctor said they have to drink more water and try making them drink a glass of water before they can have juice, but it isn't working well because we are not consistent and there is no rhyme or reason to when I follow this rule. So I will be interested to see what ideas others have. Oh one more thing I try to do...after they drink 1 glass of whatever they have chosen, they can't have another until they eat their meal. (except water, that is always available and rarely chosen) :)

Maybe think of it as a serving of fruit? Does that help you feel better about it? I'm a mean mom. I say, "You get two choices, water or nothing." And they've gotten used to drinking water and it's no big deal. Maybe ask your pediatrician. It might not be a big deal at all that they drink a lot of juice.

Here are my ideas:
Only bring sippy cups with juice when you are going out of the house. Otherwise, drink juice in a SMALL cup at the table during the day, like at meals. Saves your carpet, too! And they will get to the point where they don't need it every time you go somewhere. Julianna never asks anymore.
Also, fill the cup 3/4 with water. They probably won't know the difference! And use smaller sippy cups, if you can.
But I hear you, JoAnna! I have good juice days and bad ones. Food is a whole other story...

Thanks all for your comments. These are all great ideas. I did try teh V8 juice...they were not impressed. Our juice supply is just about out, so I will not be buying anymore. Welcome boys to mommy's bootcamp! Water or nothing, I like that rule. Juice will be only given when we go out to eat- it will be a special treat all around. I'll keep you posted.
